Twelve of Grant County’s outstanding graduating seniors were honored with The Community Foundation’s Academic Excellence Awards. All of this year’s recipients received special recognition plaques along with monetary awards.
Two students will receive full, four-year scholarships as the Community Foundation’s 2010 Lilly Endowment Community Scholars. They are Krista Buckler, Eastbrook High School, and Marlo Niverson, Madison-Grant High School. Krista and Marlo will receive full tuition to the Indiana college of their choice, plus an $800 stipend for required books and equipment.
Krista Buckler, daughter of Jack and Sharon Buckler, with a 4.0 gpa ranks first in her class and plans to attend Indiana University-Purdue University-Fort Wayne to study Nursing. Marlo Niverson, daughter of Charles and Karen Niverson, ranks sixth in her class with a 3.90 gpa and plans to study Pre-Med at Indiana University.
Each Grant County accredited high school is allowed to select one representative for the Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship Award. The representatives must have a minimum 3.5 grade point average. Selection criteria include scholastic achievement, attitude, character, desire, and school and community involvement.
Other Lilly finalists included King’s Academy’s Amanda Schmucker, Lakeview’s Jerolyn Seaborn, Marion High School’s Sarah Weirich, Oak Hill High School’s Rachel Winger, and Mississinewa High School’s Season Wyatt. Each of these students will receive a $1500 scholarship from the Lawrence and Otie Sanborn Educational Endowment Fund held within the Foundation.
After the Community Foundation’s scholarship selection committee narrows the field of representatives to two nominees and one alternate, the finalists’ names are submitted to Independent Colleges of Indiana, Inc. (ICI) for the selection of the recipients.
ICI is a nonprofit corporation that represents 31 regionally accredited degree granting, nonprofit, private colleges and universities in the state.
Other Academic Excellence Award recipients include Eastbrook High School ’s Olivia Bertsch, Marion High School’s Ashley DeMichael and Mallory Kramer, Oak Hill High School’s Cody Reaves, and Mississinewa High School’s Ellen Steinke. Each of these students will receive $1000 scholarships from the Community Foundation’s Academic Excellence Award Fund.
