Lt. Governor Skillman Awards Gas City

$360,000 for Historic Preservation Project

City Presented a Community Focus Fund Grant

"Our state cannot be divided into the have and the have-nots. That's why Monday was an important day for Indiana's small towns and rural communities. Gas City and 25 other communities will share more than $11 million to help with infrastructure improvements, downtown revitalization, libraries and fire services. I awarded Gas City $360,000 to make renovations to the Thompson-Ray House for leadership training and meeting space for civic organizations."

                - Becky Skillman, Lt. Governor of Indiana,

as stated in a press release last week

It's exciting to know that a leadership training center will be built in Gas City, but the $360,000 received for renovations is just a start.  Some matching money is needed to meet the requirements of the grant awarded and to complete the project as well.  If you're interested in helping donate to this project, contact the Community Foundation. We have a fund specifically dedicated to this project!

Westminster Presbyterian Preschool

Celebrates 40 Years of Ministry

Westminster Presbyterian Preschool is the longest running preschool in Grant County. This fall the preschool will begin its 40th year of ministry to young children. The preschool was founded on September 7, 1970 by Mrs. Sadye Bradley after the Christian Education Committee of Westminster Presbyterian Church made a recommendation to open a preschool. During the first year, 55 children were enrolled filling two classes of four and five year olds and one class of three year olds. The following January, 15 "scholarship kids" were added to the enrollment consisting of children of families who could not afford to attend preschool. As the years continued the preschool grew as it continued to provide quality, developmentally appropriate Christian education for young children. The Young's Library was later opened at the preschool with a collection that has grown to include 3300 selections that represent the best of children's classical, contemporary, and sacred literature as well as movies, audio books, computer games, and books on parenting, child development and Christian living.

As the preschool begins its 40th year, many exciting additions to the program are being offered to meet the needs of families today. Just as kindergarten has made the shift to full day, the preschool now offers, along with a half day program, a full day option from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.  Continuing in its mission to make a Christian preschool experience possible to all families, Westminster Presbyterian Preschool still provides scholarships to families who demonstrate need, and now accepts CCDF vouchers. As a participant in the Adult and Child Food Program, nutritious snacks and lunch are provided as a part of the program.  The preschool offers classes for children starting at age one through pre-Kindergarten and which adhere to NAEYC guidelines including low student to teacher ratios.

The preschool is located at 1100 Jeffras Avenue in Marion, two blocks northwest of Marion General Hospital. There will be an Ice Cream Social Open House from 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, August 6th.

CIT Offers Carrot, Wields Stick
CIT group, one of the nation's largest lenders to small and medium-sized businesses, sweetened its offer regarding debt buybacks on Friday. CIT has offered to purchase notes from lenders at roughly $850 per $1,000 outstanding on each note. While offering this "carrot" CIT simultaneously announced that if the buyback is unsuccessful it will have no choice but to file for bankruptcy protection.
