Boost Tax-Deductible Expenses

Donate to charity. It pays to be charitable, especially at the end of the year. Donating with cash, check, or credit/debit cards is always a good idea. You can also donate stock, property, household goods, clothing, and other items depending on the specific charity. Under the Pension Protection Act, you will need a written receipt for all charitable donations and donated items must be in good condition. You can also deduct the cost of driving for charity at 14 cents per mile. But, you cannot take a charitable deduction for the value of your time or services when volunteering.

Giving money away to a worthy cause is a great tax strategy to         implement at the end of the year. For one thing, you'll be able to assess how much money you have left over to donate, and secondly you're in a  better position to estimate your itemized deductions to find out if you are  eligible to itemize and how much extra deductions you might need to tame your tax liabilities.

Charitable donations are tax-deductible, but only if you itemize. If your itemized deductions don't even come close to your standard deduction amount, then you'll benefit more by taking the standard deduction and  forgoing the charitable deduction. If you are close to itemizing, giving to   charity could push you over the threshold, thus making you eligible to deduct a wide range of expenses from medical bills to tax preparation fees.

As a reminder, charitable donations must be made by December 31st at midnight.  This is true wheterh you give money or donate  non-cash items.

And, as always, please call us if you have any questions about your charitable giving for 2009 or the future.  You can reach the Foundation at 765.662.0065 or find out  more on our website at www.comdn.org.

Personal Planner

Most families purchase their largest personal residence in their mid-forties. Families with children often need the additional space. Other families think they want to purchase a home that they can enjoy for many years.

How to Make Home a Safer Place for Seniors

Dear Savvy Living,

My parents have lived in the same house for more than 40 years and plan on living there the rest of their lives. The problem is, their house is two-stories and isn't very practical for seniors. What resources can you recommend that can help my elderly parents stay safe and stay put, on a limited budget?

Estate Tax -- Repeal in 2010 and Return in 2011

On December 3, 2009, the House passed the Permanent Estate Tax Relief for Families, Farmers and Small Business Act of 2009. The act would make permanent the $3.5 million estate tax exemption and the 45% estate tax rate.

Big Rally in the Bond Market this Week

Treasury prices fell with yields rising to new highs this week in the bond market's biggest rally in two months. Signs of weakness in the global economy renewed interest in the dollar (which also rose this week) U.S. government debt.

Mortgage Rates up Again

Freddie Mac reported 30-year mortgage rates up again this week, but still below the 5% threshhold. The 30-year fixed-rate mortgage (FRM) averaged 4.94 percent%, up from last week when it averaged 4.81%.

We know many of our donors will be celebrating Christmas this week.  I thought this poem was not only funny, but oh, so true.  Merry Christmas!

Christmas Chill

Enjoy your Christmas day in peace,
Avoid any kind of quarrel or wrangle.
Chill out, relax and enjoy the day,
And don't get your tinsel in a tangle.
