Helping Haiti

Philanthropy is different than charity. Traditionally, philanthropy reflects long-term strategic investments in creating real change. But in times of national and/or natural disaster, both respond in short-term ways that can be most helpful.

The recent devastation in Haiti reflects the kind of disaster that call both charity and philanthropy to action.

Your Community Foundation has been working for you by researching safe and effective ways our donors can make donations to help those suffering in Haiti due to the recent disastrous earthquake.

The people of Haiti need our help.  Donations may be made through many organizations.  May we suggest the following:

The Salvation Army has had an overwhelming response by the American public that led them to setup two separate donation systems to handle your credit card donations.  If you experience any lengthy delay, please click on the second donation link. Donate Now to the Haiti Earthquake relief (Option 1); Donate Now to the Haiti Earthquake relief (Option 2)

United Way Worldwide is working through its members and other partners in Haiti to respond to this disaster.  Gifts to the United Way Disaster Fund support recover and long-term rebuilding needs of the devastated Haitian communities.  Find out how to help at http://www.unitedway.org/haiti.

World Vision has worked in Haiti for 30 years and has some 370 staff in country. The organization encourages donations to the Haiti Earthquake Relief Fund. Follow on Twitter: @WorldVisionUSA.

Glaucoma Sneaks Up On Seniors

Dear Savvy Living,
What are the risk factors for glaucoma? My 82-year-old father lost much of his vision from it about 10 years ago and my sister was recently diagnosed with it. Neither had a clue anything was wrong.

BoysGirlsColorTeesFrito-Lay and the National Football League Name Colts Fans from Marion, Ind., as NFL's 'Most Fanatical Family'

Dru McCoy, Vice President of the Community Foundation Board, and the Barnes Family win a VIP Trip to Super Bowl XLIV After Fans Around the Country Voted Them the Winners!  Check out the Frito-Lay press release below:

Plano, Texas and New York (Jan. 14, 2010) -- PepsiCo's Frito-Lay North America division and the National Football League today announced that Dru McCoy and the Barnes Family - longtime Indianapolis Colts fans from Marion, Ind. - are the winners in the search for the NFL's "most fanatical family" and will receive a VIP trip to Super Bowl XLIV. McCoy and her family were named the NFL's "most fanatical family" after fans around the country cast nearly 400,000 votes in the contest.

"We are absolutely thrilled fans voted us the NFL's 'most fanatical family' and that we get to go to the Super Bowl," McCoy said. "Our passion for the Indianapolis Colts has always been a fun and exciting way to bring our family together. Now it's extra special knowing that we're going to the Super Bowl and will have a family memory that will last a lifetime. And, of course, we're especially excited because the Colts could be one of the teams playing at Super Bowl XLIV."

The family's prize features a five-day/four-night trip to attend Super Bowl XLIV, which will be played Sunday, Feb. 7, at Dolphin Stadium in South Florida. The trip includes round-trip air transportation, hotel accommodations, suite tickets to Super Bowl XLIV, and tickets to the Super Bowl Saturday Night Party and NFL Tailgate Party. Dru McCoy's husband, Kevin, daughter Kaitlin, mother, Phyllis Barnes, sister Tonee Pieroni, and even brother-in-law Carl - the lone Green Bay Packers fan of the bunch - will all join Dru to travel to South Florida for The Big Game.

McCoy and her family never miss watching a Colts game, and even plan their family get-togethers around game days and decorate their home with Colts memorabilia.

McCoy and her family beat out nearly 1,000 other families from around the country who entered the Frito-Lay and the NFL's "Calling All Families" contest this past fall by submitting a photograph of their family on game day and an essay describing why they thought they should be named the NFL's most fanatical family. A panel of judges composed of Frito-Lay and NFL executives then selected eight semi-finalists based on several criteria, including team spirit, enthusiasm for the game and demonstration of family gathering. Each semi-finalist and their families traveled to NFL Films to record a video bringing to life their enthusiasm for their favorite NFL team, and thousands of fans watched the videos online and voted to determine the winner. McCoy and her family's video can be seen online at www.nfl.com/callingallfamilies.

"Dru and her family's creative submission and passionate loyalty to the Colts makes them truly deserving of the NFL 'most fanatical fan' honor," says Justin Lambeth, Frito-Lay Marketing Vice President. "Frito-Lay snack chips and dips also bring something special to game watching, and we're happy to give Dru and her family a memory that will last for years to come."

"In a year of great competition and memorable plays on-the-field, Dru McCoy and her family showed us they have what it takes off-the-field to make it to the Super Bowl," says Mark Waller, Chief Marketing Officer of the NFL. "We are pleased to have our most passionate fans, the McCoy and Barnes families, join us in South Florida at Super Bowl XLIV."

We are so blessed to live in the United States of America.  In times of crisis, if we have the capacity, we should help.  Keep the Haiti Relief Efforts top of mind in the coming weeks and months.  Do what you can to help those in great need.
