Why Give Away Money? The Power of Giving
by Ed Russell

I can honestly say that I miss every dollar I ever gave to any charity.  That's because I find it hard to make money and hard to nurture money to grow, and hard to be frugal in the expenditure of money.  Money requires discipline, hard work and sacrifice.  So why give it away?

Different people have their own reasons but let me share the four that have been most compelling for me:  Example, Statement, Synergy, and Spirituality.

I give money as an example to others so they will be encouraged to support the causes I support.  Money is like a vote that we all cast.  The more we spend on a certain kind of coffee shop the more of those kind of coffee shops will show up in the world.  In the same way, if your values dictate that there should be more help for troubled youth (or whatever your cause may be) then voting for those values with your dollars not only helps bring more of the service into the world but it also inspires others to join your cause.

I also give money to make a statement.  It's easy to grouse about what's wrong with the world or even to spout grand value statements.  But unless I put my money where my mouth is, it is "all sound and fury amounting to nothing."  I believe that 100 years from today, all our toil, our trials and even the memory of our names may be forgotten.  All that will be left will be our acts of love. Our contributions will live on anonymously, nurturing and supporting future generations in the same way that the contributions of past generations support us today - giving us a better life than most of our benefactors ever knew.  I give because I want to stand up and be part of humanity's legacy of good (as opposed to its other legacy).

However, not all my motivation for giving is selfless; I like to give whenever I see an opportunity for business synergy.  Some businesses spend thousands of dollars on advertising when the synergy created by charitable giving may be a far more effective use of their money.  I have personally experienced new business as a direct result of my name being associated in the media with charitable giving.

Another way I have used charitable giving in business is to make donations in honor of my top clients.  It has been one of my most effective means to solidify a client's loyalty.

Finally, I give as an act of spirituality.  Sacrificial giving (i.e. - giving that hurts) is a cleansing, renewing experience.  It is a concrete way to display to yourself that you have not become captive to materialism:  that your life is about more than money.

For me, the biblical 10% is the minimal annual giving goal.  But I have known people - often people who are quite poor themselves - who have given more.  I have even witnessed a person who gave all they owned to help another in need.  My gifts in comparison are small, but they are sacrificial just the same.  They keep me grounded.  They are a way for me to ensure that I control my money - rather than the other way around.  Everyone has their own reason for giving. These happen to be four of mine.

November 13, 2009 - Pencil it in!

Friday, November 13th could be your lucky day!

In celebration of the Community Foundation's 25th Anniversary, we are launching an online giving campaign that could benefit our any endowed fund held at the Community Foundation. Yes, you can donate to the charitable organization of your choice.  Donations between $250 and $1000 could be matched at a 1:4 ratio as a way to leverage your charitable dollars as a donor.

The match will apply to donations made between 12:00 a.m. Friday, November 13th through 1:00 a.m. Saturday, November 14th or until the $5000 cap is committed, whichever comes first.  So, plan to make your donation early in this 25-hour campaign opportunity.

Donations can be made at www.comfdn.org by clicking "Donate Now".

So, plan to increase your charitable deductions to your favorite charity, improve the quality of life in Grant County, and make your money work for you all at the same time.

And, tell your friends, too...Matches like this don't come around often!

Savvy Senior
Energy Programs that Can Help Seniors Save
Dear Savvy Senior,
I've heard that there are some government programs that help seniors make home improvements to reduce their energy bills this year. What can you tell me about this?

Following a marathon session with consideration of over 500 amendments, the Senate Finance Committee completed work last week on The America's Healthy Future Act of 2009. Senate Finance Committee Chair Max Baucus (D-MT) was obviously pleased with the results.

Marriott International, Inc. reported a $466 million quarterly loss this week. Third-quarter income was at $53 million, a 57% decline over the same quarter of last year.

Treasurys prices rose this week pushing yields to a five-year low as the government prepared to sell 30-year bonds. With money market rates low, investors are gravitating towards Treasurys as a "safe" investment.

Freddie Mac reported 30-year mortgages at the lowest level in four months this week, near the all-time low reached earlier this year in April.

Frances Willard once said, "I would not waste my life in friction when it could be turned into momentum".  So true!  What can you do this week that increases momentum...a.k.a. The Big MO?  Think about it, then do it!
