Helpful Hints

for Completing Scholarship Applications

  • Remember your scholarship application represents YOU!
  • Give your application the time, attention, and preparation it deserves.
  • Read and follow the instructions carefully.
  • Type or print neatly.
  • Proofread your work.  Check the spelling and grammar.  Ask a parent, friend, or teacher to proofread your completed application.
  • Be honest and be yourself.  Be specific and be personal.  It is your job to make your application stand out from the rest.
  • Make certain the people you ask to prepare your letters of recommendation know you well.
  •  WATCH DEADLINES!  Financial aid offices and scholarship personnel adhere to them!
  • You are responsible for making sure that ALL parts of the application arrive on time.  If letters of recommendation or transcripts are required, give the people who will provide these documents generous lead-time.  Also give them a stamped, addressed envelope if the recommendation is to be mailed separately.
  • Make a copy of the application for your file.
  • Submit a FAFSA even if you don’t think you qualify for aid.  Being rejected for federal aid is sometimes a prerequisite for private awards.
  • Inform financial aid administrators about unusual expenses.  Certain allowances may be made to assist you.
