Helpful Hints

for Scholarship Interviews

Some, but not all scholarship applications will require a personal interview.

Come prepared for your interview!  Know as much as possible about the field you plan to study and the job outlook in that field.  Know as much as possible about the college you plan to attend.  Don’t be afraid to have notes with you and to use them.  Finally, be sure to have one or two questions in mind that you might ask the interviewer.

Do’s and Don’ts

 DO:

  • Be punctual and check the interview location before leaving home.
  •  Dress appropriately as if applying for a job, which means neither too casual nor too dressy.
  •  When you meet the interviewer(s), introduce yourself, make eye contact, and use a firm handshake.
  • Listen to interview questions carefully; think about what you will say before replying.
  • Be brief and honest with your answers.
  • Have questions ready to ask the interviewer(s).
  • Be prepared to discuss your college and career goals.
  • Maintain eye contact with the interviewer(s).
  • Remember to SMILE; don’t be shy.
  • Demonstrate interest and confidence.
  •  Thank the interviewer(s) for his/her time and consideration; send them a thank-you note after the interview.

DON’T

  • Assume the interviewer(s) are knowledgeable about you and your background.
  •  Be negative or critical about teachers, school, or friends.
  •  Be afraid to say, “I don’t know” or ask a question at the appropriate time.
  • Expect the interviewer(s) to make a decision on the day of the interview.
  • Chew gum, bite nails, smoke, yawn, stretch, or slouch.

Questions you will probably be asked:

  • Information on your background.
  •  Your academic achievements and why you should receive the scholarship.
  • Personal matters such as finances, future plans, things you are interested in.
  • Your personal value structure, which may include the things you think are important in your life.
