Last year, the Community Foundation’s Youth Grant Program awarded $17,000 in grants.

The Youth Grant Program was established in 1997 to teach the youth of Grant County the values and rewards of philanthropy. The program is split into two age groups. The Youth Grant I Program is for 4th and 5th graders using a $10,000 budget, and the Youth Grant II Program is for 7th & 8th graders using a $7,000 budget.

The Committees meet three times during the school year. Students are asked to search within their schools and communities for needs. Once the needs are identified, the students prepare and present their grant proposal to their peers. The Committee then votes on which proposals will receive grant money.

During the 2010-11 school year, the students were able to fund 61 worthy projects, including:

  • Audio books for the school library
  • Craft supplies for the Boys and Girls Club
  • Food and beds for the Humane Society
  • Gift bags for the men's homeless shelter
  • Food for St. Martin Community Center
  • Smoke detectors for the Marion Fire Department
  • Sound system for the Red Barn
