Last year, the Community Foundation’s Youth Grant Program awarded $16,990 in grants.

The Youth Grant Program was established in 1997 to teach the youth of Grant County the values and rewards of philanthropy. The program is split into two age groups. The Youth Grant I Program is for 4 th and 5 th graders using a $10,000 budget, and the Youth Grant II Program is for 7 th & 8 th graders using a $7,000 budget.

The Committees meet three times during the school year. Students are asked to search within their schools and communities for needs. Once the needs are identified, the students prepare and present their grant proposal to their peers. The Committee then votes on which proposals will receive grant money.

During the 2007-08 school year, the students were able to fund 77 worthy projects, including:

  • LED traffic warning lights for Center Township Fire Department
  • Supplies for Hands of Hope Women’s Shelter
  • Supplies for the Grant County Humane Society
  • Items for the Pediatric Center at Marion General Hospital
  • Nutrition Drinks for Patients at New Hope Hospice
  • Accelerated Reader Books and Tests
  • Gifts for Teacher and Staff Appreciation Week
  • Playground Equipment
  • Science Lab Equipment
  • Feed Shed for the Gas City Zoo
  • Blankets and Personal Hygiene Items for Flannery Keal
